Asthma/COPD Update

Timings: 9.30am - 4pm (registration from 9am)

Who is the study day suitable for?

Suitable for all clinicians who are involved in, or would like to become involved in, the diagnosis and management of asthma and COPD.

Why should I attend?

The National Review of Asthma Deaths (RCP 2013) identified gaps in care which led to avoidable deaths.  This day updates you with the latest evidence about how to diagnose and treat asthma.  You will learn how to introduce, step up and step down therapies and there will also be sessions on supporting self-management and managing acute asthma.

QOF requirements for COPD care will have changed in April 2019, so we will consider what these changes mean, along with reviewing how the diagnosis is confirmed and how evidence based management is best achieved, recognising that NICE and GOLD have similar (but different) approaches.  There will also be an update on the management of acute exacerbations and a review of self-management in COPD.  There will also be some discussion of asthma/COPD overlap.

This day enables you to network with colleagues and counts as 6 hours of CPD using a collaborative learning approach for your revalidation

By attending this day you will be able to:

  • Have a clear understanding of how and when to diagnose asthma and COPD, based on national guidelines
  • Understand the process of differential diagnosis
  • Recognise the different approaches to managing asthma and COPD as described in BTS/SIGN, NICE and GOLD guidelines
  • Differentiate between inhaled therapies, both drugs and inhaler devices
  • Gain more clarity about medico-legal and ethical issues when treating people with respiratory diseases
