Phlebotomy Refresher


For those who have previously completed the venepuncture course and would like to refresh their skills.

Phlebotomy training courses are aimed at those healthcare professionals working in a clinical or healthcare setting who are responsible for obtaining blood from patients such as babies, adults and older people with duties including monitoring medication levels, treatments, screening and interventions.

Learning outcomes of the sessions

  1. To have a working knowledge of the local and national policies and protocols surrounding venepuncture.
  2. Understand your scope of practice, responsibilities and accountability.
  3. Be secure in obtaining consent and patient identification.
  4. Understand the application of the ANTT and principles of IPC.
  5. To be familiar with the related anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system understand promotion of vasodilation and consideration of vein selection.
  6. Be aware of the associated risks and complications in obtaining a venous blood sample
  7. To be able to prepare the patient, equipment and environment applicable to the individual and the task
  8. To be able to evidence practice through legible documentation and understand the method reporting adverse events clearly.

You will receive a certificate of competency once you have completed the competency document & your line manager notifies the education & development centre.
