Making Sense of the Menopause: An Introductory Series for Primary Care Clinicians

Session 1: Presentation and diagnosis of menopause and perimenopause

  • Menopause and perimenopause definitions
  • Pathways women can enter the menopause
  • The hormonal picture happening during this process
  • Recognition of symptoms of the menopause and perimenopause
  • The impact that menopause and perimenopause can have on women both physically and mentally

Session 2: Management of menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms

  • Simple advice measures to improve symptom relief for menopausal and perimenopausal women
  • Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms
  • Explaining options to patients or signposting them to the correct clinician to discuss treatments further

Session 3: Practical prescribing of HRT

  • Risks and benefits of HRT with your patient
  • HRT preparations
  • Commencing prescribed HRT
  • Side effects of HRT and signposting on to a suitable clinician with expertise in the menopause

Session 4: Specific condition management in the menopause

  • Diagnose and treat genitourinary syndrome of the menopause
  • Counselling on sexual health and contraception in the menopause
  • Menopausal management of those with history of migraine, endometriosis and breast cancer
  • Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Session 5: Menopause in the news and Q&A session

  • Menopausal symptoms impact on work
  • Body identical and bioidentical HRT
  • Testosterone and the menopause
  • Recommendations regarding CBT for menopausal symptoms
  • Have some knowledge of tachyphylaxis with HRT

Speaker for the session is Dr Steph Manton MBChB DCH DFSRH DRCOG MRCGP PGCert MedEd a GP Multi-Professional Educator for Herefordshire & Worcestershire Training Hub

Biography

Dr Steph Manton has been a GP in Worcestershire since 2009.  Having completed her medical degree and GP training in Manchester and the North West, she relocated back to her home county with her GP husband.  She currently works part-time in a busy Worcester City practice and spends the other half of her week working as a GP Mentor and as a GP Multi-Professional Educator for the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Training Hub.  She has particular interests in Menopause Care, Paediatrics and Medical Education.  She lives in rural Worcestershire with her husband and two children.  In her spare time, she can be found enjoying the great outdoors.
