Sleep Apnoea for Primary Care: Helping to Address a Growing Public Health Burden
Taking place online on the 18th of October, from 13:00 - 14:00.
Speaker for the session: Lewis Gidden
Host for the session: Dr Adi Rattehalli, GP and GP Fellow
The detrimental effects sleep apnoea has on both the individual and society has only really been recognised in the last few decades. Despite this, it is the most common sleep medicine referral from primary to secondary care with numbers increasing considerably over recent years. As with diabetes, obesity and heart disease, all comorbidities of sleep apnoea, there is a need for those working in primary care to have the knowledge and confidence to recognise when to refer to secondary care as well as to help specialist sleep clinics with the long term management of patients. This session has been designed to serve both as an introduction and refresher for primary care professionals on sleep apnoea and aims to cover four key topics.
- Detection of patients: clinical history and physical examination
- Information for patients: lifestyle advice and DVLA guidance
- Local diagnostic and treatment pathways for Herefordshire and Worcestershire
- Patient follow-up: supporting patients on CPAP therapy
